UPDATE: 10-year-old shooting victim identified, suspect moved to juvenile center

UPDATE: The Mishawaka Police Department has identified Saturday's shooting victim as 10-year-old Sophia Burks.

Police say the circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation and ballistics and autopsy results are pending.

The suspect, 17-year-old Jacob Olvera, has been moved to the Juvenile Justice Center of Saint Joseph County.

Police say the case will be handled through the juvenile courts but may be moved to adult court if appropriate.

Police say Olvera does not live at the home where the incident occurred but is the boyfriend of the victim's older sister whose home it was.

ORIGINAL STORY: MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- A 17-year-old has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a 10-year-old girl. Mishawaka Police responded to the 300 block of Taylor Street on reports of a child shot. Upon arrival, officers located a 10-year-old girl suffering from a gunshot wound, and she was pronounced deceased at the scene. 

17-year-old Jacob Olvera was arrested on several charges, including:

  •  Possession of a Machine Gun
  •  Dangerous Possession of a Firearm
  • Criminal Recklessness, a Level 6 Felony
