Wrestler disqualified before match with Granger native in Olympic final

GRANGER, Ind. -- An Indian wrestler who was set to face Granger native Sarah Hildebrandt for the gold medal on Wednesday morning was disqualified from the 50kg women’s freestyle match at 2024 Paris Olympics.

According to Olympic officials, Vinesh Phogat -- the disqualified wrestler -- was the first Indian woman to qualify for an Olympic wrestling final, but she did not make the weight required to compete on Wednesday morning. She weighed a few grams over 50kg, and Phogat reportedly fainted due to dehydration after disqualification.

Competition rules say wrestlers must stay in their weight category on both days of the tournament.

"Wrestling's international governing body - United World Wrestling - have now elevated Guzman Lopez to face Hildebrandt in the final," Olympic officials said.

Guzman lost to Phogat in the semi-final. Yui Susaki of Japan and Oksana Livach of Ukraine will compete for the bronze medal.
