BERRIEN COUNTY, Ind. – On Mar. 16, the Benton Harbor and St. Joseph communities came together for the Women’s Unity Walk in Berrien County.
Approximately 100 people walked along the Bicentennial Bridge in a show of support and unity.
Saturday's event was organized by the Berrien County Democratic Women’s Club.
Organizers believe the event will help improve the lives of women and families in their communities.
Event organizers say the goal is to learn and understand the challenges women face and foster coalitions to acknowledge the inequality that exists in the community.
Multiple speakers attended the event to discuss the issues women face.
Berrien County Democratic Women Chair Kim Jorgensen Gane said, “We must gather around the things we can all believe in. And when women prosper, our families prosper.”
St. Joseph, Michigan resident Nikki Gauthier said, “It’s not mean to be a one and done situation. This is meant to be the beginning of an annual event – our communities are separated by a river. We walked across that bridge today as a symbol of trying to unify our communities.”
