Woman arrested for Criminal Recklessness after attempting to run over husband

St. Joseph Superior Court - Montana Chick Mugshot

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- According to the South Bend Police Department, on Friday, Sept. 5, Montana Chick nearly crashed into her home and attempted to run over her husband.

Chick has been charged with Criminal Recklessness Committed with a Deadly Weapon as a Level 6 Felony and Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Endangering a Person as a Misdemeanor.

On Sept. 5, South Bend police officers responded to reports of a drunk woman attempting to run people over outside of a home on Sherman Avenue in St. Joseph County. When they arrived, they saw Chick behind the wheel of a running Jeep in the yard.

As officers approached, Chick exited the vehicle, and the officers report she appeared upset, smelled strongly of alcohol, and had difficulty standing upright.

Upon speaking with the home's resident, officers learned that Chick's husband was also present and that, 10 minutes prior to the officers' arrival, Chick had arrived, driving through the yard and nearly avoiding hitting several parked cars and the house itself.

The resident further noted that her three-year-old was sleeping in the room Chick nearly crashed into.

According to the resident, Chick's husband tried to stop Chick by approaching the Jeep, only for Chick to make a sharp turn towards him and accelerate.

Another witness confirms that Chick nearly hit the parked cars and attempted to run over her husband. However, Chick's husband, also appearing to be intoxicated, only reports that she drove "near" him.

Chick attempted several standardized field sobriety tests, failing to recite the alphabet, or count backwards.

Chick also showed signs of vertical gaze nystagmus, involuntary eye movements that can be an indicator of possible intoxication by substances other than alcohol.

After Chick refused to provide a chemical test sample, officers transported her to the hospital and sought a blood draw warrant. After Chick resisted further, she was restrained, and a blood sample was taken. Results of testing are pending.

Her first hearing is set for Tuesday, Sept. 23.
