Winter workshop helps birders identify ducks, geese, and swans

Elkhart County Parks

GOSHEN, Ind. -- The Elkhart County Parks, Goshen City Paks, and Goshen Department for Environmental Resilience will co-host a Winter Waterfowl Identification workshop on Jan. 31.

The workshop is designed to help participants, ages 12 and up, to confidently identify ducks, geese, and swans commonly found during the winter months.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Rieth Interpretive Center, and then to Fidler Pod for the outdoor portion of the workshop.

The program combines classroom-style instruction with field observation, giving attendees hands-on experience identifying waterfowl by plumage, behavior, habitat, and flight patterns.

“Winter is one of the best times to observe waterfowl, but it can also be one of the most challenging,” said Krista Daniels, Interpretive Naturalist. “This workshop is designed to help people of all experience levels build practical skills they can use in the field right away.”

The workshop is open to beginners and experienced birders. Bring binoculars if you have them, otherwise, they will have binoculars to loan out for the workshop.

No preregistration required. For more information, visit www.elkhartcountyparks.org or contact Krista Daniels at 574-875-7422.
