ORIGINAL: CHESTERTON, Ind. -- The Indiana State Police Criminal Investigations Section was requested by Chesterton Police Chief Tim Richardson to investigate an officer-involved shooting which took place on Wednesday morning.
The report states at around 8 a.m. Wednesday, officers with the Chesterton Police Department responded to the Hilton Garden Inn at 501 Gateway Boulevard to investigate a complaint from hotel staff about a suspicious person, who had been in the hotel, but was not a guest.
Two officers arrived on scene and found the individual, later identified as 45-year-old Joseph Gerber of Winamac.
The report states during the initial interaction between officers and Gerber, a confrontation occurred.
Police say at some point during the altercation, the officers exchanged gunfire with Gerber.
One officer was struck by gunfire and later taken to a trauma hospital in Illinois for treatment of that injury.
Gerber was pronounced dead on scene by the Porter County Coroner.
The coroner's autopsy report states Gerber's cause of death as a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head along with multiple gunshot wounds.
Gerber's manner of death was ruled a suicide, according to the coroner.
No other officers or individuals were injured during the incident.
Police say the officer who was shot has since been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
ISP Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators responded to the scene and initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Once completed, the findings will be turned over to the Porter County Prosecutor for official review.
Gerber's next of kin has been notified.
The investigation is ongoing.
