UPDATE: Suspect in shooting of ISP trooper found dead, no ongoing threat to public
ABC 57 UPDATE FIVE: We are learning the circumstances surrounding the stolen car involved in the incident.
The Berrien County sheriff tells ABC57 News that the suspect allegedly took a vehicle for a test drive and never came back. He then allegedly brought the car to the casino to steal a license plate. That's when the chase and shooting ensued.
UPDATE FOUR: Indiana State Police confirmed the suspect found dead.
Police say there's no ongoing threat to the public and more information will be released at a later time.
UPDATE THREE: Berrien County Police tell ABC57 the chase began as a suspected stolen vehicle was found in the Four Winds Casino in New Buffalo.
Tribal police attempted to pull the suspect over; when they wouldn't stop, officials say other agencies joined in a chase that weaved across state lines.
UPDATE TWO: Indiana State Police report the officer was shot multiple times and remains in stable condition.
Officials say 100 officers, including SWAT and K9 units, are searching for the suspect in the area of Westville. The suspect is said to have fired a weapon at officers during this search.
People in the Westville area are asked to stay indoors as the search continues for their safety.
Officials say the encounter began as a traffic stop in Berrien County. A chase involving an apparent stolen vehicle ensued. The shooting happened near the Speedway along I-94.
UPDATE: Indiana State Police say the trooper was taken to Franciscan Health, where he is in stable condition.
LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- An Indiana State Police Trooper was shot Friday morning near the Michigan City Exit along I-94, according to ISP.
Right now, there are no details on the condition of the trooper or what led up to it.
