Waste Management named new trash pickup service for Mishawaka

NOW: Waste Management named new trash pickup service for Mishawaka

MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- The City of Mishawaka announced its new trash pickup service will be Waste Management in the upcoming year after transitioning from Republic Trash Services.

The partnership came from some encouragement from the city council, with Waste Management being one of three providers proven to be price effective and the most responsive provider to offer quality customer service for their residents.

The new contract developed over the past few months, with city officials saying Waste Management simply won the bid and was the best fit for residents.

Residents are encouraged to continue placing their trash cans outside by 6 a.m. and it will continue to be picked up by 6 p.m.

Matt Lentsch, Mishawaka Executive Director of Developmental and Governmental Affairs, reiterates this change is not to disrupt residents' schedules but to partner with the best provider.

“We try to keep as much the same as possible because we didn't want to have a lot of disruption. Anytime you have disruption, it ruins people’s routine, and we want to make sure we have the best service.” said Lentsch “When people put their trash out, they want it picked up, and so we believe we have a great partner, not just the lowest, most responsive, but a great partner.”

One of the biggest changes will allow you to have one to two oversized items per household such as a couch or freezer to be scheduled for pick up at no additional cost.

If your trash is missed, it will be scheduled for pickup within 24 hours. They have also equipped all the Waste Management trucks with cameras to verify pick-ups and drop-offs.

Under this new contract residents don’t have to worry about adjusting their schedule too much because the trash routes, times, and days will be the same. The only thing that changes is the physical trash can and a slight price increase.

There will be a $6 increase to all trash services elevating the price from $15 to $21 to upgrade with this new trash provider.

You can contact the City of Mishawaka or Waste Management directly with all questions and concerns.

Brand new bins will be delivered by Dec. 31, and the old trash bins should be picked up on or by Jan. 1, 2025.
