NEW BUFFALO, Mich. -- It may feel like beach weather, but lake water temperatures are still on the chilly side—currently in the 60s along the southeastern shore.
Water takes longer to heat up than land, which is why it stays cool even when air temperatures hit the 80s. This is due to a property called "specific heat."
Swimming Safety Guide:

Below 64°F: Very cold—risk of cold shock
65–70°F: Still chilly without a wetsuit
78–82°F: Comfortable for swimming
The water may be too cold for a swim, but you can still enjoy the beach—soak up the sun, play some games, and stay tuned as lake temps continue to rise.
