Voluntary audit indicates St. Joseph County elections were a success

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The St. Joseph County’s Clerks Office and County Election Board announced on Tuesday that they completed a successful voluntary audit of the 2024 General Election in St. Joseph County, in coordination with the Voting System Technical Oversight Program (VSTOP).
"The post-election audit, using statistical methodology and random ballot inspection, concluded with 99 percent confidence that the election systems used in St. Joseph County functioned properly, resulting in correctly tabulated and reported election outcomes," St. Joseph County Clerk's Office said.
"A total of 112,329 ballots were cast in last year’s election and just over 1,700 of the ballots were inspected to achieve the 99 percent confidence level in the certified election results for three selected contests. Ballots were hand inspected to ensure that the election systems tabulated cast ballots correctly."
A spokesperson for the clerk's office said this type of audit gives the highest level of confidence possible when using a sample of ballots.
“This type of post-election audit is highly efficient in confirming election outcomes. The only other way to confirm the election was correctly tabulated is through a recount, which is costly, time consuming, and cannot be done at the request of County Election Officials," said VSTOP Election Systems Audit Specialist Matt Housley.
"I think it shows a lot about the County Election Officials in St. Joseph County and the transparency they are voluntarily bringing to their election. I have confidence in Indiana’s elections, so these results were not unexpected, but it’s always impressive to see Indiana Counties completing these audits with flying colors."
While the audit was completed on Dec. 5, 2024, the results were not released until Feb. 18, 2025.
