Vehicle leaves roadway and overturns during police pursuit in Berrien County
Berrien County Sheriff\'s Office BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. -- Today at 1:20 p.m. a deputy with the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office traffic unit attempted to stop a Dodge Grand Caravan on Territorial Rd. in Berrien County, Michigan.
The vehicle failed to pull over and subsequently increased their speed and fled from the deputy. The deputy pursued with emergency lights and sirens activated. The suspect vehicle continued to flee eastbound on Territorial Rd. at speeds more than 110mph while disregarding several stop signs.
While the suspect was fleeing, they failed to properly negotiate a curve near N. Arent Rd., crossed the center line, and ran off the roadway to the left, where the vehicle collided with a tree and overturned.
The suspect was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was wearing their seatbelt at the time of the collision. They sustained serious injuries and were transported to Lakeland Hospital in Saint Joseph, Michigan for immediate medical treatment. They were subsequently airlifted to Buttersworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
The suspect was identified as a 20-year-old male from Lawton, Michigan who will not be identified until he is formally charged and arraigned. The crash investigation is being handled by the Michigan State Police.
