UPDATE: Female recovered from Lake Michigan identified

JUNE 27 UPDATE: On Friday, South Haven Police Department released an update on the unknown woman pulled from Lake Michigan earlier this week. 

"The SHPD has learned the identity of the female reference who died on June 23. She is a 67-year-old resident of New Mexico whose family owns property on the lakeshore," the statement reads.

"It appears the female was alone at the residence at the time of the incident. It appears the female went for a swim but never got out of the water. There is no indication of foul play at this time in her death. The South Haven Police Department is still awaiting autopsy results. Out of respect for the family, the South Haven Police Department will not be releasing her name."

ORIGINAL: SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. -- The South Haven Police Department responded to a report of a subject in Lake Michigan near 20th Avenue on Monday.

Officers say the call came in around 6 p.m., and when they arrived on scene, they found an unconscious female floating in the water.

South Haven Area Emergency Services soon arrived and retrieved the individual.

They began lifesaving measures and took her to an ambulance.

Despite their efforts, the woman was later pronounced dead at Bronson South Haven Hospital.

Authorities say the identity of the deceased female is currently unknown.

An investigation into the identity of this individual and the circumstances leading to this incident is ongoing.
