UPDATE: One person in custody after two-vehicle crash on Ewing Avenue in South Bend

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - UPDATE: South Bend Police report a driver is in custody following a crash that injured multiple people on South Bend’s southeast side.

Authorities were called to the area of Ewing Avenue and Marine Street for a vehicle crash with entrapment Wednesday afternoon.

Upon arrival, officers observed two vehicles involved, an SUV carrying a driver with three passengers and a sedan carrying one driver.

Police say two people from the SUV were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, one being a young child.

A baby and another passenger in the SUV did not require hospitalization.

The driver of the sedan was taken to the hospital with multiple injuries.

Officials say none of the injuries appear to be life-threatening.

Police say their initial investigation suggests impairment was likely a factor in the crash.

The driver of the sedan was taken into police custody while being treated for his injuries and is expected to be taken to the St. Joseph County Jail on his release from the hospital.

Ewing Avenue between Miami and Leer Streets was closed for several hours as police investigated.

This investigation is ongoing.

ORIGINAL STORY: St. Joseph County dispatch reports they got a call at 3:37 p.m., Wednesday afternoon of a crash on East Ewing Avenue and Marine Street.

Authorities say two vehicles were involved and first responders were on scene to transport at least one person to the hospital.
