On Oct. 20, the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Office was called to a residence in North Webster for an unresponsive 9-month-old girl. An officer arrived to find the infant still breathing and conscious.
EMS told the deputy they believed the girl had overdosed on fentanyl and Narcan had to be used twice to counteract the effects.
The officer spoke to the baby's mother, who said she took the child to the home for a birthday party. The children there were brought colored pens from the homeowner's bedroom to use.
When she noticed the girl had been given a pen, it was taken away, but the girl began to have labored breathing a short time later.
The infant was taken to the hospital where she tested positive for fentanyl.
