"It should be noted that over the course of the last several months, the LCSO has been made aware of individuals delivering contraband into Westville Correctional by utilizing drones, and also by throwing contraband over the fence into the prison grounds," the LCSO said.
Authorities were sent to the area, and in the course of search, they found a white Nissan Altima with a distinguishable black bumper parked at a local gas station.
The vehicle was allegedly making strange U-turns and, when authorities noticed the car did not have working license plate lights, a traffic stop was initiated around 11:56 p.m. as the Nissan was pulling into Taco Bell.
The driver was identified as Donovon Nelson. Deputies questioned Nelson and his license status returned as Suspended due to a misdemeanor through the State of Indiana.
Nelson was taken to the La Porte County Jail and four cell phones were taken from the Nissan, which was registered to a Anterrion Kavasi Chatfield-Johnson.
Back at Westville, a LCOS deputy deployed a drone and located a person laying down in the corn field on the North side of the Westville Correctional Center.
The deputy retrieved his certified patrol K9 partner, Simba, from his patrol vehicle.
Authorities began to converge on the subject while the drone was flow overhead, helping to guide the officers to the suspect.
As they got closer to the subject laying in the field, a deputy shouted out to him: "Anterrion, police with K9! Stand up now with your hands up, or we'll send the dog, and you'll get bit."
"The subject stood up from the ground and placed his hands above his head," the LCSO said.
The suspect was identified as Anterrion Kavasi Chatfield-Johnson and taken into custody.
While canvassing the area, authorities located a backpack on the North side of the prison between the exterior fences.
The bag contained two large bundles of tobacco, the bundles had the following contents:
- Three Ziploc bags of marijuana totaling 73.6 grams
- Tobacco totaling 1875.9 grams
- Two packages of TOPS rolling papers
- Two packages, a total of eight cigars
When questioned, Chatfield-John told authorities he was at home when he got a call from someone to ask him to pick up something from Chicago and bring it to Westville.
"He was asked who the package was supposed to go to, and he stated that he did not know. Anterrion did not know who he picked up the contraband from. He stated that he did not know What the package contained," the report states.
"Anterrion stated that there was package in green bag. He stated that Nelson had no idea that he was going to deliver package with contraband to the Westville Correctional Facility, however, Anterrion also stated that he was going to be paid $1000 to deliver the contraband and was going to split the money with Nelson, since Nelson drove the vehicle."
Nelson and Chatfield-Johnson were both charged with felony Trafficking with an Inmate.
