Man faces felonies for allegedly attempting to fly contraband drone into prison

LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- The La Porte County Sheriff's Office reports deputies along with officers from the Westville Police Department and Westville Correctional Facility, received a notification from the Westville Correctional Facility's UAS Sentry Drone Detection system on April 3 around 10:32 p.m., resulting in one arrest.
The system indicated a drone was in the air around the Westville Correctional Facility.
Official court documents state deputies, officers, and Indiana State Police troopers responded to the south side of the facility inside Tazco Redi-Mix, at 5642 U.S. 421, where the drone was detected.
Authorities say there have been several recent reports and cases of people flying drones carrying contraband into the facility.
At this time, Tazco was closed. Authorities from responding departments then entered the Tazco property along with county K9 Simba to track the suspect.
Authorities then announced their presence and that Simba may bite. Shortly after this, authorities said an individual was seen running south of Tazco along U.S. 421 near the edge of the property.
The suspect was told to stop and didn't stop leading to Simba being given the command to apprehend. Authorities say shortly after, the suspect stopped and raised his hands, Simba was called off, and the man was detained.
The suspect was later identified as Zamale Davis. Westville Warden Jason Smiley said he recognized Davis from a previous drone trafficking incident from March 2.
Davis told authorities he left the drone and items between two vehicles before he ran.
Police then searched the Tazco property, where they found batteries and bag release device between cement trucks on the west side, and a black duffle bag behind the cab of one of the cement trucks.
Authorities say inside the bag was an Autel drone, the remote, and multiple bags of contraband to fly into the facility.
Documents state the bags being utilized are the same bags used in the March 2 incident and have been found inside the facility.
Smiley and a correctional police officer took the items to the facility to process.
The items were collected into evidence and documented and are as 811.4 grams of marijuana, 453.1 grams of tobacco, cell phones, chargers, vape pens containing THC, 1364 rolling paper wraps, 11 lighters, drone, drone batteries, skyhooks to be used as the payload delivery system, duffle bag, net bag, and electrical tape.
WPD took Davis into custody for two Level 5 Felony counts of Trafficking with an Inmate and was taken to the La Porte County Jail.
