ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. -- The Indiana Department of Natural Resources are investigating an incident that left two Indiana children submerged in frigid waters on Sunday afternoon.

Authorities say the call came into the Allen County Sheriff’s Department around 12:25 p.m. on Sunday and they were dispatched to the area of 1197 Mayrock Drive in Fort Wayne.

"Two friends, a 9-year-old and 8-year-old, were playing near a neighborhood pond when the 9-year-old fell through the ice," authorities said. "The 8-year-old attempted to help the 9-year-old when he fell through. The 8-year-old self-rescued and sought help from the father of the 9-year-old. The father, Kareem Bordley, age 39, was not able to find his son in the chest deep water."

Divers from the Fort Wayne Fire Department pulled the 9-year-old from the water at 1 p.m. and he was immediately taken to a Fort Wayne hospital in critical condition.
