Two arrests made in connect to the theft of bronze veteran markers
LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- The La Porte County Sheriff's Office has announced the arrests of 53-year-old Terry L. Wood and 25-year-old Breanna C. Puentez in relation to the recent thefts of bronze veteran markers from headstones.
On Aug. 28, the agency made a public announcement on the investigation encouraging families to visit the gravesite of deceased veterans, and only a day later, credible information was provided to identify a suspect.
The investigation revealed that bronze markers were taken from headstones in the Union Hills and Rolling Prairie Cemeteries, but were also taken from headstones in the Carmel, Greenwood, Pinola, and St. Stan's Cemeteries.
It has been discovered so far that approximately 15 bronze veteran markers have been reported stolen and one as being damaged.
Investigation findings were presented to the La Porte County Prosecuting Attorney's Office and to La Porte County Circuit Court where probable cause was found for the arrest of Wood.
An operation dubbed 'Justice, Peace, and Salute' was executed this morning at a residence in the 400 block of Andrew Avenue in La Porte where Wood was taken into custody and further evidence was recovered.
Later in the day, Puentez was taken into custody and charged in Circuit Court for her role in the theft ring.
Both Wood and Puentez remain in the La Porte County Jail for the following offenses:
- Theft - a level 5 Felony
- Cemetery Mischief - 15 counts and a level 6 Felony
Wood is being held on a $15,005 cash only bond and Puentez is currently out on bond.
“This type of criminal behavior is disgusting, unacceptable, and will not be tolerated in La Porte County! It is the hope of the entire Sheriff’s Office that because of the diligent and thorough investigation by Detectives Koch and Banic, justice will be served to both accused subjects. Hopefully, US Veterans, both deceased and living, can find peace and comfort with these arrests, and with that, we salute them for their service," stated Captain Derek J. Allen.
