Elkhart County Parks ELKHART, Ind. -- “Fiddlesqueak,” “bogsucker,” “mudbat,” and “timberdoodle” are just a few of the colorful nicknames for the American Woodcock—a small shorebird with a big personality. Join Elkhart County Parks for a Timberdoodle Trek to witness the dazzling twilight flight display of these unique birds at 7 p.m. on March 20. at Lieber Nature Preserve.
“It’s one of the weirdest birds out there, but they really put on a show,” said Annie Aguirre, Marketing Coordinator. “You’ll see this football-shaped bird with a long bill waddle into the middle of a field and announce itself with these nasally ‘peent’ calls—kind of like the classic Looney Tunes Roadrunner’s ‘meep, meep!’
Due to limited parking at the preserve, participants will meet at the Elkhart County Historical Museum parking lot and carpool to the viewing site. The museum is located at 304 West Vistula Street in Bristol, Indiana. Participants are encouraged to dress for the weather and arrive early, as the group will depart promptly at 7 p.m. Binoculars will be available for use. Admission is free and open to ages 8 and up. Space is limited, and advance registration by March 20 is required.
