Three people sent to hospital following head-on crash in Berrien County

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. -- UPDATE: The Berrien County Sheriff's Office has released the names and conditions of the parties involved int the head-on crash.

The driver of the Chevy, identified as 27-year-old Victor Becerra, was taken to South Bend Memorial and is in good condition.

His passenger, identified as 26-year-old Monica Rodriguez, was released from Franciscan Hospital earlier this week.

The driver of the Nissan, identified as 57-year-old Paul Brickner, has also been released from Spectrum Health of St Joseph.

Authorities say the crash remains under investigation.

ORIGINAL STORY: The Berrien County Sheriff's Office reports deputies responded to a two-vehicle crash on U.S. 12 near Grand Beach Road in New Buffalo Township around 8:01 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 9.

The report states that upon arrival first responders located a Chevy Malibu and Nissan Rogue with extensive damage.

The driver of the Chevy, identified as a 27-year-old man from Hammond, Ind., was pinned inside the vehicle and extricated using the jaws of life. He was taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend to be treated for multiple broken bones and injuries to his lower extremity.

Authorities say the Chevy's passenger, identified as a 26-year-old woman also from Hammond, Ind., was not wearing her seatbelt and suffered life-threatening head and facial injuries.

She was taken to Franciscan Hospital in Michigan City.

The driver of the Nissan, identified as a 57-year-old man from Chesterton, Ind., also suffered injuries and was taken to Spectrum Health in St Joseph.

Investigators say they learned the Chevy was traveling east on U.S. 12 and drove left of center striking the front driver's side of the Nissan traveling west.

Witnesses on scene reported to deputies that the Chevy may not have had its headlights on, contributing to the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.

Authorities say it's currently unknown whether speed or alcohol played a factor in the crash.
