BENTON HARBOR, Mich. -- The non-profit Harbor Impact Foundation Inc. announced it's teaming up with the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi and its Four Winds Casinos, along with other sponsors, to bring The Original Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament to Benton Harbor and St. Joseph on June 27 and 28, 2026.

Organizers say part of downtown Benton Harbor will be transformed into "Mackerville" for one weekend.

Local charities, youth groups, churches, and more will set up a "tent city" surrounding the temporary basketball courts.

Players and families are encouraged to bring tents, folding chairs, and food/beverages for their teams.

Food trucks and several other vendors will also be on site.

The tournament is open to four-person teams in three categories, including Junior, Adult, and Top Level with different brackets for male and female teams from age 8 to 80.

Organizers add that Gus Macker uses computer matching to ensure teams of similar height and ability can all compete fairly.

All teams are guaranteed three games in a double elimination format.

Tournament features:

  • Slam Dunk Contest
  • 3-point Shootout
  • Free Throw Contest
  • Kids Court Area (for the little ones)

All players will receive a Gus Macker t-shirt as well.

The Gus Macker Tournament began in Lowell, Mich. in 1974 on a driveway. It's gone on to bring friendly 3-on-3 competitions to 75 towns and cities across the country to help raise money for local charities.

Full disclosure, ABC57's Brian Conybeare is the Board President of Harbor Impact Foundation Inc.
