Construction paused on GM battery cell plant in New Carlisle

UPDATE: Bill Schalliol, Economic Development Director of St. Joseph, sent the following to ABC57: 

"The County is aware of this new PAUSE condition at the GM site and has been working with GM, the State, and other partners as GM moves into this new site status. Work will be done to secure the building and the site during this state of PAUSE, and we anticipate that this new condition will start in late June."


NEW CARLISLE, Ind. -- Construction on the GM battery plant in New Carlisle is on pause.

Officials at GM confirmed the closure directly to ABC57 this afternoon, May 14. A statement from the company reads:

Construction of the battery cell plant in New Carlisle, Indiana will be paused to align production capacity with current demand. GM and Samsung SDI will communicate plans for the site at a future date.

ABC57 is working to learn more on what this may mean for the future of the plant.
