LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- This week's heat isn't slowing down the La Porte County Fair, but it is changing how people and animals stay safe.

Temperatures are expected to climb into the mid-90s this week, with feels-like temps around 100. That's changing how exhibitors care for their animals.

Seventeen-year-old Dixie Hay is spending the day caring for her two horses, getting them ready to show, cleaning their stalls, and making sure they stay hydrated.

“I’ve been giving them water, I rinse them down a lot, I have a lot of fans on them," said Hay.

Hay says she checks their water buckets every hour and after each ride, she hoses them down to help keep them cool during the heat.

The Fair Board President, Steve Mrozinski, says there's water at all the barns and the show arena, with E-M-S crews on hand if the heat becomes too much.

“We're going around to all the barns making sure the animals have water and we’re putting out coolers with water and everything at the arena so when the kids are showing they can come out and get water and just keep everybody cool as we can,” Mrozinski said.

But the heat hasn't stopped the fair from drawing crowds.

Food vendor, Colin Colglazier explains that as long as it’s not raining people tend to come out and acclimate to the weather.

Mrozinski encourages everyone to come dressed appropriately and stay hydrated.

“I don’t think the heat is stopping the people at all, they just want to come out and have a good time,” Mrozinski said.
