Suspect identified, charged in Laurel Woods shooting
St. Joseph County Jail: Jamal Leonard ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- A 19-year-old has been arrested and charged in connection with Monday night's shooting at Laurel Woods apartment shooting.
Officers with the South Bend Police Department responded to the 800 block of W. Laurel Woods Court for a shooting.
A woman was found on scene suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. She was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Police used a drone, a K9 and the department's Real-Time Crime Center, eventually tracking the suspect to a nearby building, where he was arrested.
The suspect, Jamal Leonard, is charged with Battery by Means of a Deadly Weapon, a Level 5 Felony, and Criminal Recklessness, a Level 6 Felony.
Leonard is being held at the St. Joseph County Jail.
The report states in an interview with Violent Crimes Unit detectives, Leonard admitted to the shooting and was hiding from police but said he fired in self-defense.
Authorities say video evidence shows Leonard initiated the gunfire.
