Sturgis Police's Public Safety Director placed on leave

STURGIS, Mich. - The city of Sturgis announced Sunday that Public Safety Director Geoffrey Smith has been placed on administrative leave.

On August 15, Smith was involved in a vehicle crash while off duty and was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, reports said.

The St. Joseph County Sheriff's Department began an investigation.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, the city stated.

Smith was placed on administrative leave pending investigation.
