NOW: Storm damage restoration, experts advise checking in on insurance policies

SAINT JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- The extensive damage left by Sunday’s storms and tornadoes is causing a headache for many, especially when it comes to filing insurance claims.

Many across Michiana making calls to their insurance agents on Monday to figure out how their cars, homes, or businesses can get repaired.

"I know our team moves as quickly as we can but sometimes a lot of patience is involved when it comes to making an insurance claim,” explains April Black, Marketing and Business Development professional with ServiceMaster by Monroe Restoration. “So, we're going to do everything we can to secure their home in the immediate sense and then help them through the insurance claim process."

Luckily, Black says most of the time, wind and tree damage is covered by a person’s insurance provider.

When you pick up the phone to call your insurance agent and report your damage, they will get in touch with restoration services like ServiceMaster to get started on immediate cleanup.

Then, the process of filing a claim begins.

As Michiana anticipates another round of storms later this week and in general entering the storm season, professionals suggest people refresh themselves on their policies.

"My advice would be, get to know your policies over the next 48 hours before we're supposed to get more storms later this week,” says Nathan Benge, ServiceMaster by Monroe Restoration Branch Manager. “Make sure you know what your coverages are and the specifics."

Even uninsured people can receive help.

Servicemaster is a place that can help people without insurance or those with out-of-pocket expenses obtain financing options.
