UPDATE: St. Joseph County Police provided this press release from the time of the incident:

On Monday, May 11, around 8:20AM, St. Joseph County Police were called to the 52000 block of Hastings Street for reports of unwanted persons/trespassing.

When officers arrived, one individual fled on foot. That individual was caught and apprehended.

Around the same time, a car fled the scene containing two individuals. During that time, one of our officers fired their weapon but no one was hit.

The car took off and a pursuit ensued.

Ultimately, all parties involved have been detained and no individuals or officers were hurt during this incident.

In accordance with the interlocal agreement between the St. Joseph County Police Department (SJCPD), the Mishawaka Police Department (MPD), and the South Bend Police Department (SBPD), SBPD is leading the investigation and will release additional information as it becomes available.

Once the outside agencies complete their investigation, the facts, evidence, and statements will be presented to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

The St. Joseph County Police Department will also conduct an internal investigation regarding the officers’ actions in accordance with department policy, procedure, and training.

Per protocol, the officer who fired their weapon has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

ORIGINAL STORY: ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- A St. Joseph County officer is facing multiple charges of alleged Criminal Recklessness, including two felonies and one misdemeanor.

The St. Joseph County Police Department confirmed that Craig Swanson was indicted by a grand jury on these charges.

Officials say this stems from a May 11, 2026 incident when Officer Swanson fired his weapon.

Department leadership tells ABC57 that Swanson is on unpaid administrative leave.
