St. Joseph County Council updates residents on Affordability Agenda

NOW: St. Joseph County Council updates residents on Affordability Agenda

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- The St. Joseph County Council, along with Republican State Senator Linda Rogers, gave an update Monday on an Affordability Agenda that was unveiled in January.

The agenda was brought by four GOP members, focusing on four main points:

  • Extending the property tax cap for homeowners age 55 and older
  • Help seniors stay in their homes with property tax deferment
  • Provide tax breaks for first time home buyers
  • Allow monthly property tax payments so people can pay in smaller amounts

Council members stated that tax cap had been extended for four years and that the driving force behind the agenda is to keep seniors in their homes.

St. Joseph County is the only county in the state to make the 55 and older property tax cut.
