ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- On Monday, Jan. 12, the County Council unveiled their affordability agenda for 2026.
The four members on the council included Amy Drake, Joe Thomas, Randy Figg, and Andy Rutten.
The members talked about four main points: to extend the 55 and older tax cut beyond three years, help seniors stay in their homes with property tax deferment, provide tax breaks for first time home buyers, and allow monthly property tax payments.
In regard to the 55 and older tax cut, they explained that SJC was the only county in the state to make this program available county wide.
The council is working with state senator Linda Rogers to extend the program beyond 2026. Residents who are eligible have to be 55 and older, have a homestead, and have lived in their home for at least 10 years.
Residents can apply for the program through the auditor's office and website.
