SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- To kick off their annual Cinco De Mayo celebration on Saturday, St. Adalbert Church announced that through several grant foundations, they've fully fundraised the first level of a multi-tiered restoration project.
After publicly starting their fundraising efforts in late 2023, the church has already raised more than $2.5 million.
The first step of restoration is "sealing the envelope", which involves re-roofing the church, something hasn't been done in more than 40 years.
With the first phase fully funded, the church expects to have designs completed by the beginning of the summer, and construction ready to go in September.
Ideally, the church hopes to have a new roof over parishioners' heads by the time snow starts to fall in November.
The next phases of the project include tower restoration, the addition of handicap accessible bathrooms, new heating and cooling systems and a series of other interior projects.
Proceeds from Saturday's event were also added toward the church's fundraising efforts.
The annual celebration featured games, traditional food, live music and vendors while highlighting the significant role that the Hispanic community plays in South Bend's west side.
St. Adalbert's hopes to have each level of the restoration process completed by 2026, just in time for the 100-year anniversary of the church.
Anyone looking to contribute to the restoration project can find more information here.
