SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A historic Catholic Church in South Bend is about to get a multimillion-dollar upgrade.
St. Adalbert’s on the City’s West Side is set to celebrate 100 years of service next year, and without the needed renovations a study showed they would not have been able to make it through the next 10.
The parish was founded in 1910 to serve the needs of Polish- speaking immigrants.
It now carries the same mission more than a century later, though Spanish speaking immigrants.
The new roof is nearing completion as they get through phase 1, but the work is far from over.
“So what we’d like to do is restore the church so another 100 years from now, we can serve another immigrant population,” said Don Popielarz, the Director of the Restoration Program at St. Adalbert’s.
