Special Olympics Indiana hits historic athlete milestone

Special Olympics Indiana

Special Olympics Indiana announced Monday that the organization passed the historic milestone of over 20,000 athletes being served statewide.

The 56-year-old nonprofit was launched in Indiana in 1969, growing from small roots into a statewide organization.

Special Olympics Indiana increases participation in Olympic-style sports, brings students together through sports in its Unified Champion Schools program, and offers early learning providers play-based activities.

"From young children just learning the joy of sports to those competing at the highest levels of our statewide competitions, every participant contributes to this moment," said Jeff Mohler, President and CEO of Special Olympics Indiana. "Growing to more than 20,000 athletes is not just about numbers. It’s about expanding opportunity and building stronger communities in every corner of our state."
