South Bend police increasing foot patrols

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Students who went back to school Wednesday found an increased layer of security.

Police started their routine foot patrols in South Bend.

The move comes as a direct result of last years' tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

"We're just there for visibility so the kids don't feel a negative presence when we're there. When we're inside if we see something amiss we'll investigate it more. There’s more of a visibility and awareness thing," said Captain Terry Young.

The patrols will become part of their routes to help reassure parents, teachers, and students.
