South Bend fire used as training exercise

SOUTH BEND, Ind. --Tuesday night, investigators are trying to figure out the cause of a South Bend hose fire.

Firefighters responded to a home on Chapin Street, around noon.

When they arrived there was so much smoke, and crews were not sure how many homes were on fire.

Thankfully, it was only one house and no one was home at the time.

Firefighters quickly got the flames under control and even used the fire as a training exercise.

Carl Buchanon with the South Bend Fire Department said, “This is great training to see brothers out here performing the functions they're going to be required to do.”

Firefighters told the trainees to make sure and especially observe the safety measures that were taken at the fire.
