South Bend Cubs First Basemen earns Midwest league Player of the Week Honors

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- South Bend Cubs first basemen Matt Mervis was named the Midwest League Player of the Week from May 9 through May 16.

Mervis was an instrumental part of the Cubs nearly undefeated 12-game homestead in which the team went 11-1.

During the 12-game stretch, Mervis batted .415 and was the owner of the longest-running hitting streak in the conference at 13 games in a row.

Overall, Mervis hit four home runs, including a walk-off game-winner against the Fort Wayne Tincaps, and knocked in 13 RBI’s.

With the honor, Mervis becomes the second straight South Bend Cub to receive Midwest League Player of the Week Honor’s after Alexander Canario was awarded the same title the week before.

The Cubs are currently 20-13 and are third in the Midwest League.
