SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- In what was supposed to be celebratory with Notre Dame grabbing a win over Michigan State quickly turned into one of panic for many, and it all started at one of the busiest streets on gameday.
On Saturday around 7:30 p.m. South Bend Police were advised that a male was observed with a firearm and reportedly pointing it at people.
An individual was found matching that description on the south end of Eddy Street but was not armed.
Soon after, South Bend Police heard a gunshot at the intersection of Angela Boulevard and Eddy Street.
Officers quickly located a woman with non-life-threatening injuries. The victim was transported to the hospital.
A South Bend Police Officer was also injured. Preliminary evidence shows they were grazed by a ricocheted bullet but ultimately was treated on scene with non-life-threatening injuries.
With the suspect still on the loose South Bend Police Chief, Scott Ruszkowski, says he’s confident with the current leads the department has.
“We do have suspect information,” Chief Ruszkowski said. “We're following every lead on that and I'm confident will find out who and why, then we will get to ask them why they would do such an idiotic thing.”
Just four hours later, more crime.
At 11:25 p.m. South Bend Police responded to a call at the 1300 block of Bissell Street on the report of a large fight which was later upgraded to a shooting.
According to officials, upon arrival, officers spotted three victims with serious injuries.
20-year-old Alaya Maez, 18-year-old Javon Hopper, and 22-year-old Geimisha Broadnax.
Maez and Hopper were pronounced dead at the scene, and Broadnax remains in critical condition at the hospital.
The South Bend Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit is actively investigating both cases.
