SOUTH BEND, Ind.-- This year marks a new chapter in the ongoing reconstruction effort at South Bend Community Schools.

Less than a month out from the first day of school, SBCSC held its final meeting at the old admin building on MLK Blvd.

The move is just one of the many changes families can expect this school year as part of the Facilities Master Plan.

A number of middle schools including Dickinson and Edison, as the school district is “right-sizing” by closing Clay High School and Warren Elementary, all part of the Facilities Master Plan.

“We’ll have a new Fine arts program at Riley this year so really excited about that and we will have K8 and every corner of the district ,” said Kareemah Fowler SBCSC CFO and Assistant Superintendent of Business and Finance.

District leaders say it has been a busy summer preparing other changes, including moving their operations from the old school corporation building downtown to the former Brown Middle School building.

“We have done everything in our processes and through the master facilities plan to make sure that the decisions that we’re making are the least disruptive decisions for families however, there is some disruption,” added Fowler.
SBCSC says all families were notified of the boundary changes, but they will reinforce this and have additional resources to help families through the transitions.

“So ultimately, everyone’s gonna be impacted by the changing we’re gonna all be in this together because we believe it’s for the better good of the school corporation,” said Fowler.
There’s still no word on what’s next for the Clay and Warren buildings.
