SJCPD confirms missing 6-year-old drowned Friday night

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- A local six-year-old who is believed to be autistic and non-verbal drowned in a neighborhood pool on Friday night, the St. Joseph County Police Department is reporting.
Authorities say the call came in around 8:41 p.m. on June 20 with reports of the missing child who was last seen leaving his home in the 52000 block of Conestoga Court in Granger.
"Officers immediately responded to the area and began their search alongside the child’s family and neighbors," SJPCD said.
"At approximately 9:02 p.m., the child, identified as Joshua Nizigiyimana, was found unresponsive in a neighbor’s pool ... in Granger."
Authorities say life-saving efforts were immediately taken, and the boy was transported to the hospital. Despite those efforts, he passed away.
While the investigation remains ongoing, preliminary information indicates this was an accidental drowning.
“Our hearts are with the Nizigiyimana family as they endure an unimaginable loss. We also extend our support to the neighbors, community members, our officers, and all first responders involved in this heartbreaking case,” says Sheriff Redman.
Joshua was a student at Horizon Elementary in Granger.
"Our hearts are broken as we mourn the loss of sweet Joshua, a beloved student of our school community," a community social media page posted.
