SJC Jail inmate attacks public defender during court appearance Friday

St. Joseph County Jail

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A St. Joseph County Jail inmate is recovering from injuries this week after he physically attacked the deputy public defender during a court appearance on June 13.

Forty-nine-year-old Edward Ray Randolph was seated in the gallery of the jail courtroom waiting to be called as the deputy public defender was participating in the hearings for other inmates.

"Randolph stood up from his seat and charged at [the deputy public defender]," court documents state.

"Randolph struck [the public defender] in the face and stated, 'I'm going to kill you.' He grabbed [the public defender] from the rear, pushed [his] torso downward and forced his head into a plastic chair along the wall."

That is when three jail employees stepped in and the public defender was able to "twist away" from Randolph.

"Randolph physically struggled with the officers and had to be tased before they could secure him into handcuffs," court documents state.

"Then Randolph attempted to kick [two jail employees] as they escorted him out of the jail courtroom. [The public defender] was treated by the jail nurse. Officers noted a red mark on his face."
