Semitruck carrying topsoil tipped on U.S. 6 Friday morning

ABC 57

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- The Elkhart County Sheriff's Office responded to a traffic incident Friday morning involving a 2006 Western semitruck that had rolled on its side and a Jeep that stopped abruptly on U.S. 6.

Authorities say a white Jeep was heading west on U.S. 6, approaching C.R. 100 when it suddenly stopped to turn south on C.R. 100.

The semitruck directly behind the Jeep was able to stop in time, but the semitruck behind that, driven by a 48-year-old man from China, Mich., was hauling a heavy load and was unable to stop in time.

"[The driver] stated that he was hauling a heavy load of topsoil and was not going to be able to stop in time to avoid a collision with the vehicle in front of him," the ECSO said. "[The driver] stated that instead of rear-ending the vehicle in front of him, he turned his vehicle into the ditch on the north side of U.S. 6."

The driver was wearing his seatbelt, was treated for knee pain at the scene, and released.
