Schools across Michiana adjust to ongoing winter weather

NOW: Schools across Michiana adjust to ongoing winter weather

NILES TOWNSHIP, Mich.—With an early start to winter creating icy roads and snow-covered neighborhoods, schools across Michiana are running out of options as continued winter weather makes it difficult for students to get to class.

In Michigan, districts are allowed six traditional snow days without e-learning before needing to apply for a waiver for up to three additional days, and Brandywine has already used its seventh closure.

In Indiana, schools are given three asynchronous learning days, which function like traditional snow days with students working from home on assignments at their own pace, while districts may use an unlimited number of synchronous e-learning days with live virtual instruction.

Concord used its second asynchronous day, while South Bend, Elkhart, Bremen, New Prairie, Knox and Plymouth utilized synchronous e-learning.

Penn-Harris-Madison used a built-in makeup day, pushing the last day of school to June 5, while Brandywine officials said they are not yet planning to adjust the calendar just yet as they wait for further guidance, hoping in-person classes can resume Tuesday.
