SBFD informs public to be aware of drill April 29

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The South Bend Fire Department is reminding the public of a scheduled training drill that will take place early next week in the East Race Waterway.
Between noon and 1 p.m. on Tuesday, a vehicle will be intentionally placed into the East Race as part of planned training exercises by the Indiana River Rescue School.
Fire officials say the simulation is a key component of the school’s intensive water rescue training, designed to prepare emergency responders for real-world incidents involving submerged vehicles.
"Whenever this training takes place, it often generates 911 calls from well-meaning bystanders concerned that a real vehicle accident has occurred," an SBFD spokesperson said. "We want residents to be aware that this is only for training purposes, and no emergency is taking place."
