RedBud Weekend, America 250 Edition

BUCHANAN, Mich. -- RedBud! The annual southwest Michigan tradition returns for its 53rd year.

The Buchanan staple sees motocross fans and racers from all over the US, and sometimes even further, descend on Buchanan for a weekend of fun, races, and good times, and folks have been partying it up all day, ahead of a big weekend for Red Bud.

Whether you're coming for the races, the camping, the food, or just the vibes, there's nothing like this Buchanan tradition where there's something for everyone

"We've got a great battle going on up front in the 450cc class championship, we've got the Laurence brothers, team Honda, and you've got an upstart rookie named Haiden Deegan with the Monster Energy star Yamaha team, and they are 1, 2, 3 in the standings and battling and it's been ferocious," said Pat Schutte, RedBud public relations director.

Motocross fans young and old are packing the grounds to make sure they secure a great view of the action

I asked a young attendee, "What are you most excited for at RedBud?"

And nine-year-old Aurora, from Findlay, Ohio replied "To see all the girls ride their dirt bikes and win. RedBud!"

This isn't just any old RedBud; it's Red Bud on the same weekend as America's 250th birthday.

"You're going to see a sea of red, white and blue, red bud is patriotic to begin with, we almost overdo it. We've got the biggest flag in Berrien County and it's flying up on our hill, it'll be a sea of red, white and blue, it's going to be as heart pounding patriotic as it can," said Schutte.

In addition to people getting their maximum fill of love for Old Glory, Schutte says there's a special moment planned for those who fought for this country.

"We went through our list and got a good idea of who in fact are veterans from previous wars and service time, so we brought them all, invited them to come out, we're going to showcase them during the intermission of the pro races, so you'll see the pro guys clapping for them and the crowd's going to go bananas," said Schutte.

On Friday afternoon, some severe storms swept through Southern Michigan, and RedBud didn't escape the heavy rains and wind. At one point, a large white tent lifted up and blew onto the racetrack. In another area, a large stretch of dirt flooded, and revelers turned it into a Patriotic mud pit.

There are no plans currently to postpone or cancel any of the festivities, and attendees seem to be taking the weather in stride, even making it part of the celebration in some instances.
