Rain to snow makes for a messy commute in Berrien Springs

BERRIEN SPRINGS, Mich. – The day started with a little sun and warmer than normal temperatures, then proceeded to deteriorate into a cloudy rainy mess. The end result was a terrible evening rush hour that saw several accidents and slide-offs.

Many people in Berrien Springs admit, this is the strangest winter they have experienced in a long time.

Some recalled fondly the constant heavy snowfalls during the 1970s, others prefer the milder winter Michiana has gone through so far this 2011-12 season.

But as temperatures hover around the freezing mark, any water on roads and bridges can turn into a dangerous situation as the sun sets.

Most prefer the weather to be either below freezing or above, and would love to see an end to the dancing back and forth over that line.

In the meantime, Berrien Springs has seen about 33 inches of snow this winter, far below the average amount.
