GRANGER, Ind. -- The Federal Railroad Association reported 2,192 collusions with 247 people killed and 766 more injured last year.
Indiana had 109 train collisions, claiming 16 Hoosier lives and injuring 30 more.
That is compared to Michigan where there were 54 train crashes, 4 deaths, and 31 injuries.
Rail Safety Week is Sept. 23- 29 nationwide.
In Indiana the State Police Department is teaming up with the rail safety non-profit, Operation Lifesaver, in hopes of bringing the number of incidents down statewide.
Serving as a yearly reminder to the public, when they see tracks, to think trains!
"It's a really important week for us particularly because we don't want to see people die and I needless way particularly when it's something that's very preventable,” said Jessica Feder the Executive Director of Operation Lifesaver.
Operation Lifesaver will be in South Bend along with Canadian National Police, and local officials as they work to stop train tragedies.
