Purvi Patel released from prison

Purvi Patel has been released from the Indiana Women's Prison in Indianapolis, according to the Indiana Department of Corrections.

On Wednesday, a St. Joseph County judge issued a resentencing order that led to her immediate release.

Her resentencing was due to the Indiana Court of Appeals' decision to reverse her conviction on a feticide charge and the reduction of the  neglect of a dependent charge from a class A felony to a class D felony.

The judge sentenced her to 18 months in prison on Wednesday. She has served 525 days and with Class 1 credit, she has served a total of 1050 days - in excess of the 18 month sentence.

Patel was released Thursday morning.
