UPDATE: Thousands remain without power in Michiana following overnight storms

2 P.M. UPDATE: I&M damage assessors report there's more than 220 individual spans of downed wires, and over 50 broken or damaged power poles.

As of 1:30 p.m. Friday, I&M officials say about 26,000 customers are without power, with nearly all remaining outages are in southwest Michigan.

11 A.M. UPDATE: Midwest Energy & Communications (MEC) reports about 6,250 customers without power in southwest Michigan after Thursday night’s storms.

Power crews are assessing damage, and contract crews have been called in to provide additional assistance.

"So far we have found seven broken poles and lots of fallen trees," MEC said.

The largest outages are in the townships of Silver Creek, Antwerp, Texas, Wayne, Bangor, Almena, Bloomingdale, Covert, Decatur, Milton, Waverly, Portage, Arlington, Porter (Van Buren County), Hamilton, and Keeler. However, additional outages are scattered throughout southwest Michigan.

8:30 A.M. UPDATE: Midwest Energy and Communications reports about 7,046 customers remain without power in southwest Michigan after Thursday night’s storms.

MEC crews are assessing damage, and contract crews have been called in to provide additional assistance.

The largest outages are in Wayne, Silver Creek, Antwerp, Texas, Bangor, Almena, Bloomingdale, Covert, Decatur, Milton, Waverly, Portage, Lagrange, Arlington, Porter, and Keeler Townships.

Indiana Michigan Power reports as of 8:30 a.m. Friday, more than 31,000 customers are without power, with 90 percent of impacted customers in Southwest Michigan.

I&M’s storm restoration team worked through the night restoring power where it was safe to do so.

I&M officials say damage assessment and response are underway.

Several downed power lines, broken or damaged power poles, and numerous downed trees have been discovered.

Due to considerable damage to electrical equipment, I&M officials anticipate having most Southwest Michigan customers who can receive power restored by 11 p.m., Saturday.

They expect Indiana customers to have power restored by 11 p.m., Friday.

I&M expects many customers will receive service before the estimated time.
