SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The largest township in South Bend, Portage Township, is making approval easier for people in need of financial assistance.
The township passed new assistance guidelines for 2023, setting the income requirement at 133% of the 2023 federal poverty level and allowing more people to be eligible for assistance.
Those who have been denied before for making just above the requirement may now be able to receive assistance.
Portage Township can help with rent and utilities, and neighbors can also apply for help with food and other non-food expenses as well.
You can call or go to the Portage Township Trustee Office to get the documents required to apply.
Applicants who are 18 or older and still in high school will need to show documentation, like a class schedule or a report card.
Anyone listing zero income as their income will need to complete an income verification affidavit for the past 3 months and explain how expenses were met.
