Portage Township partners with Matthys Little League to renovate, re-open historic ballpark

Portage Township

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Portage Township announced a partnership with Matthys Little League to renovate and re-open the historic ballpark, Matthys Park.

Portage Township officials say the park is of significant importance to the area, having been around for families and children since 1955.

The park has been unused for years with its fields and facilities falling into a state of disrepair.

In 2024, two large fires at the property left residents concerned about its vulnerability and worried the once-beloved park would become a target for vandalism.

“Matthys Ballpark is an important feature of our community and we are proud to help facilitate its comeback," said Portage Township Trustee Jason Critchlow.

"Studies are clear that active children do better in school, make better life choices, and become stronger adults. This is where they learn how to work as a team, meet goals, and solve problems.”

Portage Township says they are working with other community partners to invest and renovate the community space.

Officials say work is being completed to rehabilitate the facilities and is expected to be completed by next year.

There are several organizations and ballclubs discussing the possibility of making use of the new facilities for next season, officials said.

“Starting next year, these fields are going to be busy with both baseball and softball," says Matthys Little League President Shad Robakowski.

"As a South Bend westsider who grew up right down the street, I have never been prouder to say that ball will be played at Matthys Ballpark again. This is a huge step forward to develop our kids and build a stronger community.”
