Portage Township officials report evidence of code violations at Cedar Glen Apartments
ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. - After weeks of investigating reports of poor living conditions at Cedar Glen Apartments, the Portage Township Trustee's Office believes there is sufficient evidence suggesting the complex has violated multiple Indiana civil codes.
The investigation was done with the support of the Indiana Attorney General's office.
In order to avoid further legal action, the Township Legal Counsel has issued a Resolution Letter to the property owners requesting the following four conditions be met:
- Provide restitution to the affected residents of Cedar Glen
- Provide restitution to Portage Township for Township Assistance payments made, but services not fully provided
- Permit the formation of a local tenant’s association and seek to maintain a positive working relationship
- Agree to 3 years of compliance reporting regarding any disruptions to the habitability of Cedar Glen
Portage Township Trustee Jason Critchlow believes the requirements must be met for the Apartments to be considered a habitable space for tenants.
“This is about what is right and fair," said Critchlow. "These individuals and families deserve compensation and assurances that these habitability issues will not continue unchecked. We believe these requests are reasonable and would provide the fastest resolution for the affected residents. I am hopeful Cedar Glenn representatives will see it the same way.”
